The call of Culture for Europe is set for 2017

A city is not chosen as a European Capital of Culture solely for what it is, but mainly for what it plans to do for a year that has to be exceptional

European Capital of Culture2010 marked the 25 years of the most visible and recognisable european event celebrating culture in Europe.

Established in order to highlight the richness and diversity of European cultures, the designation of a city as capital also aims to  to promote greater mutual understanding between European citizens.

Judged upon the cultural programs presented by the competing cities,  it seems that participating as a candidate city today has more to do with how candidates address the long term effects of cultural development of cities and make use of the initiative, the structures and capacities that it creates, as the basis for a lasting cultural development strategy.

Cyprus and Denmark are designated countries legible for European capital of Culture and in Cyprus seems like the race for Championing culture in Europe is steering efforts participation by legible cities as Limassol, Paphos, Nicosia or Larnaca.

Undoubtedly the event has lots of  regeneration potential for cities and most importantly its an unmissable opportunity to bring together stakeholders around the intrinsic value of culture, its meaning for individuals and the creativity for an urban diversity. Granted that its 6 years of preparation, 2011 will be determinant for discovering the ways each canditate city will adopt its preparation stages on their path to making culture exceptional.
